PHOEBE MAAS

The young Dutch photographer Phoebe Maas focuses on situations in contemporary urban interiors. Often, they are everyday moments: dressing or undressing, sitting down, watching television, falling asleep - extracts from the normal continuum of everyday living. In accordance with these "moments in between", she also portrays fragments of actions from steep bird's eye or worm's eye perspectives, almost as if she were putting a new interpretation on the New Seeing of the 1920s, transforming everyday situations into theatrical scenes in which people and their gestures assume plastic, sculptural aspects. The recognisable forms and colours of the surrounding rooms, fragmented, frozen movements and unusual, contorted angles represent a second look at the banal elements of our everyday environment and transform them into specific, surrealist situations.
